Putting the Business in Your Beauty Business 👩🏾‍💻 | By Shari Perkins
Updated: Aug 15, 2023
When I think of beauty + business the first thing that comes to my mind is the movie "Legally Blonde" (lol). I don't know about other beauty gurus but this is definitely not the reality of putting business into beauty. To me, business + beauty is the legal work required to establish the business, the initial monetary investment needed, networking with others in the same industry, SEO, and the list goes on and onnn (check out my full checklist below).

Although this part of the beauty market is very overlooked and underestimated, it is the MOST important part (don't argue with me argue with ya mama)! Without the business aspect of your beauty brand you will quickly find yourself working backwards or starting over from square one once you have begun building a clientele. This is no fun because a brand could lose legitimacy which in turn could cause a decrease in potential customers/clients.
The best option for building your business is to work alongside an experienced beauty guru or business owner with more than 3 years in the game. This will make a huge difference in learning how to be a business owner and navigating the beauty industry. Also, working with like-minded people who are in similar industries such as social media marketing, apparel design, and other content creators will not only give you confidence and inspiration but also provide you with a point of reference when you need help in those areas. Sorry to break it to you sister, but there is no ONE person with all of the answers to your questions and no ONE place to find all of the information and inspiration you need. However, working with like minded individuals and pros in the beauty industry you will find yourself absorbing more knowledge than you could ever get from one single book or YouTuber.
In conclusion, putting the "business" in your beauty business will create a more professional experience for both you and your future clientele. Working with professionals in your industry will increase your confidence and knowledge exponentially. Lastly, try not to be discouraged by the amount of work that is required to have a business in the beauty industry. Good preparation (like reading articles of this kind) and a lot or passion for your brand should give you the stamina and drive to push through the tough spots you may find yourself in.
PS:
As promised, below is a list of things I have found to be most important when trying to get your beauty business off of the ground:
1. Legal work required to establish the business (incorporation papers, business license, EIN, business bank account, etc)
2. Initial monetary investment (cost of legal work, on-hand inventory, marketing materials, travel costs to clients, website monthly or yearly premium, labor costs for team members, merchandise costs, etc)
3. Networking with others in the same industry by attending networking events and supporting other brands
4. Creating and consistently posting content on various (at least 2) social media accounts
5. SEO aka search engine optimization (google it)
6. Marketing through ads, merchandise, events, etc
7. Business cards and flyers
